Vision, Mission and Other Objectives

Vision
To provide an educational, interactive industry forum and lobby that supports and promotes the global competitiveness, and acts in the best interests, of the North American wire producers.

International Trade Policy Mission

  • The mission of the American Wire Producers Association is to assure free access to the global supply of Carbon, Alloy and Stainless Steel Wire Rod.
  • AWPA supports and promotes US policy, legislation and international agreements which seek to eliminate trade-distorting subsidies and government intervention in the free market.
  • AWPA supports compliance by the United States and our trading partners with international trade agreements and enforcement of the obligations of our trading partners that they have undertaken in those agreements.
  • AWPA supports broad international trade liberalization with effective reciprocal market access.

Other Objectives include:

  • Encourage an increase in capacity to manufacture steel wire rod within the United States.
  • Periodically, assess and report to the membership on the present and future estimates of rod producing capabilities and rod requirements.
  • Provide representation for AWPA members in Washington, DC, through a continuing liaison with government offices.
  • Develop statistics on our membership and the employment it provides, both direct and indirect, so that we may keep government representatives informed of the importance of the industry.
  • Work to combat unfair and unlawful trade activities in connection with sales of wire and wire products in the United States.
  • Gather and distribute statistics on rod, wire and wire products with respect to imports, exports, consumption, and shipments.
  • Maintain contact with other associations to ensure AWPA interests are represented.
  • Serve as a clearinghouse for marketing opportunities, particularly from abroad.
  • Provide exchange of ideas, information and expertise in the area of plant operations.
  • Educate each of AWPA's members to be in a position of influence with their elected officials.

Benefits and Services
The AWPA provides these and other benefits and services to its members.

  • Provides a continuing liaison for the industry in government offices including those of the US Trade Representative, Department of Commerce, International Trade Commission, Department of Customs, Bureau of Census, OSHA, EPA, and Trade Committees in the House and Senate.
  • Sponsors an Annual Meeting in February and a Fall Government Affairs Conference at which the industry and government officials meet with the membership to discuss industry developments. The Fall Meeting also provides US members the opportunity for annual Congressional visits. AWPA meetings provide a forum where members enjoy occasions for informal discussions.
  • Conducts an annual survey of members to summarize the size of the US wire and wire products industry for use in government relations programs. This report is provided to Congress during annual visits to legislators, during the Fall Government Affairs Conference.
  • Educates members on the development of Congressional relationships for the purpose of accomplishing industry goals.
  • Undertakes grass root initiatives to support or oppose legislation which affects the wire and wire products industry.
  • Conducts meetings of Operations manages for the free and open exchange of ideas, information, and expertise in the area of plant operations.
  • Tracks the volume and value of shipments of imported rod, wire, and wire products into the US both by product and port of entry to measure import penetration and its effect on domestic companies. These reports are provided monthly to members on the AWPA website.
  • Prepares an Analysis of shipments, imports, exports, and apparent consumption of rod and wire and wire products. These reports are provided monthly to members on the AWPA website.
  • Surveys its wire company members and provides a monthly report of wire rod inventory held in the US.
  • Monitors compliance with negotiated trade policy agreements.
  • Assists in developing issues and supporting members in ad hoc trade related matters.
  • Publishes the bimonthly Wireline which reports Association news and keeps members informed on regulatory and legislative developments affecting the industry.
  • Maintains a presence and contact with related associations such as the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), National Association of Manufacturers (NAM), industry coalitions and related wire industry associations.
