Nail Industry Leaders Form Strategic Alliance
Tree Island Industries, a leading producer of nails for the construction
industry in the US and Canada, has formed a strategic alliance with Halsteel
Inc., of Fontana, California.
Tree Island's President and CEO, Ted Leja, said, "Don Halstead, who
is the President and CEO of Halsteel, is the inventor of the plastic-collated
nail, and has been a leader in the collated nail industry for more than
25 years." Halsteel is Don Halstead's newest company, and in its short,
four-year history, has become the fastest growing and most innovative collated
nail company in the US.
Collated nails are used in pneumatic hammers and are held in strips
or coils by wire, paper tape or plastic strip.
Lower prices for pneumatic hammers and construction growth in North
America are driving up demand for high quality collated nails. This has
created what Leja calls "a need and an opportunity" that an alliance between
these two industry leaders can better serve.
"As separate companies with a common goal," Leja said, "Tree Island
and Halsteel take an important step that will allow them to combine their
resources and talent to better meet the demands of our markets, and the
needs of many individual customers."
This alliance will enable Tree Island to access additional product lines,
which in turn will allow it to offer customers a full range of collated
products. "We anticipate this will strengthen our market position, and
provide the potential for increasing sales at both companies."

20th Anniversary Celebration Annual
Meeting - California
This year the AWPA returns to one of its favorite destinations for the
Annual Meeting, and we have something to celebrate! Be sure to mark
your calendar to be in Palm Springs, California from February 7-10, 2001.
You will not want to miss this commemorative event as members and former
members of the AWPA get together to celebrate twenty years of growth and
to set a vision for the future!
Did you know?
In 1981, the AWPA was founded (with 25 members companies) as a result
of a merger between the Independent Wire Producers Association (IWPA) and
the Specialty Wire Association (SWA). It was formed as a voluntary organization
to render service to manufacturers and the trade in connection with carbon,
alloy and stainless steel wire and wire products. Two years later, the
AWPA approved a bylaw amendment to include an Associate Member Category
to ensure continuing dialogue within the industry. Today, the 109 member
companies of the Association employ more than 76,000 workers in over 210
plants and facilities located in 37 states in 138 Congressional Districts
and 4 Canadian provinces and Mexico. Together they produce more than 19
billion dollars of sales annually. The AWPA is an international trade association
representing 80% - 90% of the producers of carbon, alloy and stainless
steel wire and wire products in the US. The members of the AWPA continue
to work hard to maintain their competitive edge in the marketplace.
Annual Meeting & Black Tie Ball
The Annual Meeting will feature traditional components of the General
Session, Committee, Board and Business Meetings, and occasions to meet
informally with friends and colleagues. On the evening of Friday, February
9th, the AWPA will host its very own Gala event. Join us for
an evening of memories, tributes, elegance, dancing and fun! The dress
is black tie and the agenda is a celebration you will not want to miss.
Plan ahead
For those of you who like to plan ahead, hotel reservations may be made
by calling the Rancho Las Palmas directly at 800-228-9290. Advise them
that you are with the AWPA to ensure the nightly group rate of $239. This
rate is good for 3 days before and after the official meeting dates. Meeting
registration materials will be mailed in mid-December. In the meantime,
the AWPA website at www.awpa.org is your source for the latest information
about this year's annual meeting.

OSHA's Self-Audit Policy Revised
OSHA has developed a final policy describing the Agency's treatment
of voluntary employer self-audits that assess workplace safety and health
conditions. The policy provides that the Agency will not routinely request
self-audit reports at the initiation of an inspection, and the Agency will
not use these reports as a means of identifying hazards upon which to focus
during an inspection.
In addition, where a voluntary self-audit identifies a hazardous condition,
and the employer has corrected the condition, and has taken appropriate
steps to prevent its recurrence, the Agency will refrain from issuing a
citation, even if the condition existed within the six month limitations
period during which OSHA is authorized to issue citations.
Another change to the policy is that employers who do not have the financial
resources to hire an independent consultant, may use their own personnel
who do not have professional certification, but do have the necessary experience
or training to conduct an effective and thorough self-audit.
OSHA Webpage Accepts Worker Complaints
OSHA has started a new web site called "The Workers' Page" that will allow
workers to file complaints electronically, alerting the agency to possible
safety problems and hazardous conditions at work sites. Until now, employees
who wanted to file complaints with OSHA and its state partners had to call
or write; and they did ? about 50,000 last year.
