Ops Managers Learn Where to Find Workers

At the Operations Managers meeting held last month in Ontario, California, attendees learned some useful ways of attracting and finding new employees in this tight job market. They also received a briefing on the recently released Effluent Limitation Guidelines for the wire industry.

Basil Whiting, from the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) reported on the results of a survey recently conducted of its members on the workforce and related programs. He advised the attendees of several ways to attract employess, including establishing relationships with local schools and community colleges. Other items discussed: incentive programs, signing bonuses, and other benefits.

Don and Mark Rains, from Assured Personnel Services, discussed the benefits of using temporary workers to fill a company's gap. Employee leasing is especially attractive to small- and medium-sized businesses that want to reduce the burden of personnel administration and still offer benefits to their employees. "Leasing organizations," they added, "also take over the onerous chore of employee recruitment." The attendees then discussed pros and cons of using temporary employees.

Rounding out the program was Mike Ebner, from the EPA, who briefed the plant managers and environmental specialists on the recently signed Effluent Limitation Guidelines (ELG) for the Metalworking and Machinery Products (MP&M) sector that covers domestic wire producers (see related article).

The next day, attendees visited three nearby plants. Starting off at Davis Wire Corporation, they saw a plant that made structural mesh, drawn and galvanized wire products, and stucco netting. The group next visited an equipment supplier ? Bergandi Machinery Company. This facility designs, manufactures, and refurbishes wire mill equipment. The last stop was at Advanced Wire Technology ? a division of TI Industries. Here the group observed eight wire drawing machines, annealer, rewinding and barcode equipment. The AWPA would like to thank these companies for their generous support of the Operations Managers program.
