2001 Government Affairs Conference, Time to Register

This years Government Affairs Conference (formerly called the Fall Meeting) is being held September 12 ? 14, 2001 at the Hilton in Old Town, Alexandria, VA. This year's topics and agenda are not to be missed, as the decision being made by the International Trade Commission (ITC) and the President over the next couple of months will directly impact your business operations.

This is the year of trade and trade cases. AWPA member companies will be grappling with the Section 204, the mid-point review of the Tariff Rate Quota (TRQ) program covering imports of carbon wire rod. Additionally, the Steel Section 201 that includes the investigation of the imports of carbon and alloy wire, stainless wire, wire rope, wire strand, and nails and staples will be at an important stage for member input. The Government Affairs Conference is perfectly timed to inform members of the progress and prospects of these cases and will provide attendees with this important information.

The General Session will delve straight into the Steel Section 201 trade case. Attendees will receive a detailed progress report, including what member companies can do to help attain a positive outcome. The decisions resulting from this investigation will certainly affect all domestic wire companies in some way.

Throughout the conference, Product Committee meetings will be conducted. Each will focus the preparation for the Steel Section 201 investigation with respect to their specific product line.

Following the General Session, there will be detailed briefings to prepare you for your afternoon of visits with your legislators. The trade cases and the Wire Rod TRQ review will be highly political and your meetings with your Congressmen and women will be of paramount importance at this time.

The Congressional Visits will be scheduled from 1:30 pm until 5:30 pm on Thursday, September 13. These pre-arranged visits will allow you to meet your legislators and their staff to discuss the issues on the AWPA legislative and trade agenda. (NOTE: Legislators' schedules are very hectic, therefore, early registration will give us the best opportunity to make your appointments.)

The AWPA will provide in advance briefing materials to you that outline the position of the Association on all the important issues. During the lunch on Thursday, you will have the opportunity to discuss and ask questions about these issues and/or the visits.
