At the most recent AWPA Board of Directors
meeting, the members approved an important
Industry Identification Project that will clearly
detail and compile the many contributions the
domestic wire industry makes to the nation's
economy. The aim is to capitalize on the number
of workers employed in wire producing companies,
broken out by states and congressional districts;
and sales dollars represented by these companies.
Although in the past AWPA has collected this type
of information, never have we embarked on such a
comprehensive and detailed approach as this one.
Each company will be providing the number of
workers they employ at each facility; and the
dollar value of how much that facility
contributes to the congressional district and
state based on company sales and general outlays.
This information will then be forwarded to each
Member of Congress in whose district there is a
rod, wire or wire products facility.
Through this effort, AWPA is moving proactively
in its government relations efforts. Policymakers
need to be more aware of the importance of the
domestic wire industry to their state and the
nation's economy overall. These economic and
employment numbers will go a long way in
educating legislators. Lawmakers at the state
level will also be advised of the figures for
their particular state.
Surveys have already been mailed to all AWPA
member companies. Please complete and return
these forms as soon as possible so that we can
start compiling the numbers. An unveiling of the
results will occur during the AWPA's Government
Affairs Conference being held September 17-19,
2002 (please refer to the AWPA Calendar).
