The Operations Managers Meetings
are Back - October 28-29, 2002
Have you been eagerly awaiting the next meeting of the AWPA Operations
Managers? It has been a full year since we had to cancel the 2001 Fall
Operations Meeting, but we are happy to announce that the meeting has
been rescheduled for October 28-29, 2002 in Vancouver, BC.
This two-day program has been designed to suit the needs of YOU - the
Operations Manager (OM) - by providing important information and
opportunities to confer with colleagues. We ask AWPA's OM's about the
challenges they face in the operation of their facilities. We then use
this information to design a timely program. Most recently, you wanted
to learn more about the ongoing "energy crisis" and how it will
continue to affect the wire industry and your plants. The meeting will
also feature presentations on wire machinery and equipment - another
interest area you have expressed to us. So here it is: Monday begins
with the general session where there will be energy professionals on
hand to address the issues and answer questions. We will then break
into round table discussion groups giving you the opportunity to
address and discuss the issues you are facing with other industry
professionals. In the evening there will be a reception and dinner and
the continuing opportunity for discussions. Tuesday begins with
breakfast and another informative general session. Group discussion
reports and presentations from three machinery supplier companies will
be given. The meeting will conclude with lunch and a tour of the Tree
Island Industries facilities, in Richmond, BC.
For the latest meeting information, bookmark the AWPA Calendar of
Events page at http://www.awpa.org/calendar.cfm. Meeting information
and online registration will be available in July. Hope to see you in
Vancouver along with your AWPA colleagues.

IWP to Upgrade/Move CA
Facility
Industrial Wire Products (IWP), a Southern California-based producer
of steel wire, bar and fastener products, has announced that it will
move and upgrade its Los Angeles manufacturing operations which has
manufactured steel wire products there since 1956.
IWP is a combination of four companies that produce carbon steel and
alloy wire, carbon steel and alloy bars, mesh, both carbon and
stainless cold heading wire, collated nails and anchor bolts. The
company will relocate its LA facility to 150,000 square feet of
available space where it currently has operations at its 17-acre
industrial complex. "This move will consolidate operations such as
cleaning, annealing and finishing operations in one location, which
will significantly reduce costs and reduce production lead times,"
said Peter Cronin, President of IWP. "Combined with our planned
investments in new equipment, our customers will benefit with shorter
lead times and faster delivery."
Plans to invest more than two million dollars in new equipment and
upgrades should be completed by September of this year. The company is
also expanding its cold heading operations with the addition of two
new Frigerio wiredrawing machines, electric furnaces and new controls,
along with upgraded surface overhauling capabilities. This capital
investment will expand and improve IWP's capabilities to produce
aerospace, commercial and automotive cold heading wire.
In 1940, IWP became one of the country's first wire drawing companies.
The company has grown to include 250,000 square feet of manufacturing
space and 235 employees. Reducing costs and tightly managing their
facility will help IWP remain competitive in this demanding
marketplace. Joe Monaco, formerly of Techalloy Company and the former
MGF Industries, has been hired to spear-head this aggressive growth
program.
First Max Moore Entrepreneurial
Spirit Award Chooses Habitat for Humanity
David Libla, president of Mid Continent Nail Corporation, has selected
the Poplar Bluff Habitat for Humanity to be the beneficiary of the
$1000 monetary award which is conferred in his selection as the 2002
Recipient of the Max Moore Entrepreneurial Spirit Award. David is the
first recipient of this award which was presented at the AWPA Annual
Meeting in February. In addition to the charitable donation in his
name, he received an engraved and very majestic statue representing
the entrepreneurial spirit which is the essence of the award. (The
award is displayed on the AWPA website on the Member Site home page.)
David's name will be the first one listed on a perpetual plaque that
will be displayed at the AWPA office and on which each future
recipient will be commemorated.
An anonymous donation was given to the AWPA to establish an award to
memorialize Max Moore, a former AWPA leader who was tragically killed
in a plane crash in 2000. The recipient of this annual award displays
the entrepreneurial spirit, the leadership qualities and the community
service with which Max Moore lived his life. We congratulate David
Libla and the Poplar Bluff Habitat for Humanity.
Insteel
Divests
Insteel Industries, Inc. announced that it agreed to sell certain
assets related to its industrial wire business to Leggett & Platt,
Inc. for approximately $10.2 million. The purchase price is subject to
a final adjustment following the closing of the transaction, which
occurred on May 20, 2002. During the first six months of fiscal 2002,
the operations that were divested, located in Andrews, South Carolina,
generated $19.0 million, or 15%, of Insteel's consolidated net sales.
"The sale of the South Carolina industrial wire business marks another
milestone in our efforts to reduce debt and narrow the Company's focus
to its core businesses," said H.O. Woltz III, Insteel president and
chief executive officer. "We are continuing to pursue further actions
to pay down debt and improve the Company's financial performance to
acceptable levels."
Insteel Industries is one of the nation's leading manufacturers of
wire products. The Company manufactures and markets concrete
reinforcing products, industrial wire and tire bead wire for a broad
range of construction and industrial applications.
