Congressional Steel Caucus Issues Goals |
The Congressional Steel Caucus has announced its agenda for the 108thCongress. Caucus Chairman Phil English (R-PA) stated that a primary issue will be the protection of Section 201, the Bush Administration's 30% tariff on foreign steel
imports that the World Trade Organization recently ruled against. The tariffs are scheduled to remain in place until 2005, and Vice Chairman Peter Visclosky (D-IN) has introduced a bill to extend the program for another five years.
Another issue of concern to the group is domestic trade law reform. English has filed a bill that would "strengthen and streamline" US trade remedy laws to grant Congress greater oversight of trade policy.
The group also encouraged the successful conclusion of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) talks pertaining to global overcapacity in steel production.
