Return to Rancho Bernardo
The Rancho Bernardo Inn in San Diego, California proved once again to be an exquisite setting for the first Annual Meeting of the new millennium. While rain showers took over most of the week, that did not stop over 250 members, potential members, spouses and guests from attending industry meetings and social events.
Unfortunately Presidential Candidate Bill Bradley had to leave the California coast early and was unable to address the AWPA. It looked hopeful for some time and when his campaign advisor called to regret, they advised us "The Senator really wanted to make an appearance". However, the speaker line-up included a plethora of interests and was very
well received (see related article).
The spouse portion of the program began with a new twist - which seemed to be of interest to everyone! "Great Wines at Great Prices" was our first (annual) wine tasting extravaganza and drew quite a crowd. We would like to thank Cindy Cronin and Wine Expert, Anne Feely for a splendid job and making this event possible.
The SUN made a wise decision and came out from behind the clouds for our traditional AWPA Sports Day! We had a record number of attendees participate in the golf, tennis and fishing tournaments. Members had time to catch up with friends and colleagues, and the day's winners were recognized at our very own Hawaiian Luau. Live entertainment brought some of our more adventurous AWPA members to their feet to participate. Thank you to all in making the
AWPA Luau an unforgettable affair.
A big thanks to all of the sports chairs: Tim Dillon, GS Industries Inc. and Nancy Foust for helping with the golf tournament which included over 110 participants; John Foster, Ferrostaal Inc., who guided the fisherman to a great day at sea; and Jan Sorige, Enkotec Company Inc. who has been successful in recruiting more and more tennis players each year.
We would also like to thank Chris Whiting of CHC Industries who photographed our week in San Diego and provided pictures for Wireline.

DUSSELDORF - Here We Come!
Wire '00 will take place in Dusseldorf, Germany from April 3-7, 2000. It is the world's leading trade fair devoted exclusively to wire production and technology. Featured at this state-of-the-art exhibition will be machinery for fasteners, springs, components, rope and related products and technologies.
The association's presence at this show further enhances the stature of the AWPA and confirms its participation and interest in the global marketplace. In terms of more tangible benefits, AWPA distributes the corporate brochures of member companies.
Please stop by booth 13H39, converse with other AWPA members or assist with visitors to the booth. Many thanks to those who have already agreed to donate time staffing the AWPA booth.
Former Industry Member Offers 'Grandfatherly' Advice
No stranger to the wire industry, Gil Smith offered an anecdotal and
entertaining presentation on the importance of grand-fathering. Using examples
from his book, Learning from Little Ones, Gil outlined how the
Generation G, or men over-60, play an important role in helping raise today's children.
The author stressed that with this generation being healthier, wealthier
and living longer, they could very well be the most powerful generation yet to
come. That is why it is imperative for them to interact with children. Gil added that
the experience of obtaining and returning "unconditional trust" with a child
will also assist Generation G men in their business as where trust is an
essential part of any sales relationship.
Aaron Steps Down
Commerce Undersecretary David Aaron, the department's top
trade official, is leaving his post this month. The Undersecretary oversees
the 2,000-member International Trade Administration (ITA), the
government's primary agency for enforcing trade agreements negotiated by the
US Trade Representative. The ITA is also slated to be the lead in efforts
to win congressional approval for permanent normal trade status for
China. Mr. Aaron did forecast an administration victory on this vote.
