MARCH 1998  VOL. 8, NO. 1
Something For Everyone In Ixtapa

AWPA selected beautiful, sunny Mexico as the site of its first Annual Meeting held outside the US. Over 250 members, potential members, spouses and guests attended the industry meetings and the accompanying social events. While there was some initial concern about the potential side-effects of travel to Mexico, members overwhelmingly reported the meeting "as one of the best ever". An unofficial poll indicates that we may never again see ties at the AWPA Annual Meeting!

On the social side of activities, members were offered the opportunity to take a sunset cruise on the Pacific Ocean and a cultural tour the local historic sites. Wonderful Mexican restaurants and open air shopping bazaars were popular attractions in downtown Ixtapa. In addition to AWPA traditional sport tournaments of golf and tennis, fishing was once again offered for those willing to brave the sea. Over 115 sports enthusiasts participated in the events.

In the golf tournament, the member's top threesome, achieving the lowest score of 62 was Dave Foust, Seneca Wire & Manufacturing Company; James E. Dionisio, CF&I, Steel -LP; and Michael S. Huhndorf, TI Industries Inc. The number two foursome, with a score of 64, was Nelson McVicar, AL Tech Specialty Steel, Inc.; Donna Spike, Greening Donald Company, Ltd.; Martin J. Payton, III, Precision Metals Services, Inc.; and Jack Lynch, Charter Steel. The top spouse's foursome included Valerie Gray, Nancy Foust, Lian Verge and Ann Feely, scoring a 75. Winner of the Men's closest to the pin was Nelson McVicar and longest drive George Kelley. Winner of the Women's closest to the pin was Linda Simmons and longest drive Sharon Allegra.

Fishing tournament winners included: First Fish, Barbara Anderson of Francosteel Corporation; Largest Fish, Jim Dionisio; Second Largest Fish, Mary Jane Martin; and Smallest Fish, Jenny Dionisio.

Your input on the Annual Meeting is important. If you have not completed an evaluation form you can find one in your Registration book; or fax (703/684-6048) Sandie Dickerson at AWPA Headquarters.
