An exciting and informative program is planned for the 1999 AWPA Annual Meeting, which will be held January 31 to February 3, at the Marriott Marco Island Resort in Florida. Trade issues will be the focus of the meeting, as it has been the focus this year among wire manufacturers. As many key decisions will take place in early January regarding steel trade policy, the Annual Meeting venue will provide perfect timing for briefings and serious discussion.
The keynote presentation for the 1999 Annual Meeting will be a panel discussion of steel trade policy options for the United States. The Clinton Administration, the Congress and all steel sectors represented in Washington, DC are addressing the issue of imports and steel prices. AWPA has assembled a panel of experts with diverse backgrounds in the trade and steel manufacturing sectors that will give members the perspective of the Europeans, the Japanese, US steel importers and the US Congress. The panel will include Charles Blum, US Representative for Eurofer, Horste Bulte, President of the American Institute of Imported Steel, Hitoshige Takegaki, Senior Vice President of Kobe Steel USA and Angela Ellard, Chief of Staff of the House Ways and Means Committee's Subcommittee on Trade.
In preparation for this exciting panel discussion, a presentation will be given on the trade law procedure, Section 201 Escape Clause. The US wire rod industry; has filed a 201 petition and will be required to prove "serious injury" to US manufacturers. An affirmative decision by the International Trade Commission would pave the way for the Administration to provide import relief to the industry. This presentation will outline the 201 procedure and identify the possible remedies the administration could impose against steel imports. Kimberly Korbel and Fred Waite will be joined by Catherine DeFilippo of the ITC.
The third component to the Annual Meeting program will be a global economic outlook with emphasis on the effect of the Asian and CIS country economic crisis. Will the strength of the US economy be able to support the recovery of these countries? What is the outlook for economic growth and consumption in China? The US? And other trading partners?
The Annual Meeting will also feature traditional components of General Session, Committee, Board and Business meetings, and occasions to meet informally with friends and colleagues.
