Wirespool Another Challenging Year for AWPA--The old adage "when it rains, it pours," looks to be very appropriate as AWPA enters the New Year. The downturn in CIS and Asian economies, and the resulting changes in the flow of steel trade, has led to:
  • a $4 million dollar advertising campaign sponsored by steel manufacturers and unions that promotes a protectionist US trade policy;
  • legislation pressuring the Clinton Administration to develop a plan to protect the steel industry from imports;
  • the filing of a Section 201 petition by seven domestic steel producers requesting relief in the form of quotas for an initial period of four years;
  • and, rumblings of legislative activity in the trade arena on Capitol Hill. --Full Story--

Wirespool Annual Meeting To Focus On Trade Issues--An exciting and informative program is planned for the 1999 AWPA Annual Meeting, which will be held January 31 to February 3, at the Marriott Marco Island Resort in Florida. Trade issues will be the focus of the meeting, as it has been the focus this year among wire manufacturers. As many key decisions will take place in early January regarding steel trade policy, the Annual Meeting venue will provide perfect timing for briefings and serious discussion.  --Full Story--

Wirespool Election 98: Two Schools Of Thought--It wasn't supposed to be that much of an election. Most handicappers agreed that Republicans were likely to make modest gains of a few seats in both the House and Senate. Those handicappers apparently missed voter anger at Congress' handling of the Clinton scandal and lack of progress on bread and butter issues important to the citizenry. This along with a greater than expected turnout among the Democrat's base resulted in small Democratic gains in the House of Representatives and status quo ante bellum in the Senate.  --Full Story--

Wirespool AWPA Members Hold Workshop, Meet With EPA --Environmental Managers from AWPA member companies converged on Washington, December 2 & 3 to take part in a series of workshops to assist affected companies complete a survey sent by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on effluents. AWPA sponsored the two-day event to help companies understand the questionnaire and the potential impact of their responses on the outcome of this survey.  --Full Story--
