The Commerce Department has launched a new 8-point "Standards Initiative" aimed at strengthening its efforts to help industry address concerns related to trade and international technical standards.

The "Standards Initiative" includes the following key components:

  • An assessment by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) of existing Commerce Department efforts to reduce standards-related barriers in foreign markets.

  • Development of an intensive training program for standards liaisons at US embassies.

  • Expanded training programs for all commercial officers stationed at US embassies and consulates.

  • Creation of a database on "best practices" in addressing standards concerns in foreign markets.

  • An expanded "early warning" system to disseminate market intelligence on standards developments in key foreign markets.

  • Partnering with the President's Export Council to give more attention to standards issues.

  • Greater outreach to US industry to help identify key standards concerns in foreign markets, including through activities outside of Washington.

  • Appointment of a senior liaison official in the International Trade Administration to ensure industry priorities are integrated into all Commerce programs.
