NOVEMBER 1999 VOL. 9, NO. 4 |
EPA-status of pm 2.5 |
EPA had proposed a dramatic tightening of air-quality standards covering two kinds of
pollution: ozone (smog) and particulate matter (PM). The agency's current PM standard calls for
the regulation of dust, dirt and similar particles down to 10 microns in diameter. The agency now
wants to add regulations governing particles as small as 2.5 microns. A federal appeals court denied EPA's request for a rehearing of the ozone and particulate matter (PM) case it lost earlier this year. A three-judge panel in May struck down the agency's ozone and PM standards on the grounds that EPA used faulty science and overstepped its authority in issuing the rules. The case now appears headed to the Supreme Court.
