President Trump announced a special 40% tariff on imports from Brazil as the result of “{r}ecent policies, practices, and actions of the Government of Brazil { which } threaten the national security, foreign policy, and economy of the United States.” These relate primarily to the Brazilian Government’s legal actions against former President Bolsonaro, which Trump has repeatedly criticized.
The 40% tariff will go into effect for imports which are entered on or after August 6, 2025.
This special 40% tariff is separate from the reciprocal tariff on Brazil, which Trump has repeatedly revised and now stands at 50%. The special tariff will be in addition to the reciprocal tariff.
Exempted from the special 40% tariff are: (a) imports subject to Section 232 tariffs (such as steel, aluminum, and automobiles); (b) imports listed in Annex I to the Executive Order (including silicon metal, pig iron, civil aircraft and parts and components, metallurgical grade alumina, tin ore, wood pulp, precious metals, energy and energy products, and fertilizers); and (c) products which were loaded onto a vessel at the port of loading and in transit on the final mode of transit prior to entry into the United States before August 6, 2025, and entered before October 5, 2025.
